Perfect Hooker is a custom 39’ walk-around sport fisher built 1994 in New
Zealand and re-powered in 2000 with twin 330 hp Cummins Diesels.
She combines the amenities of a luxury cruising yacht (air-conditioned salon,
shower/bath w/ hot water, pantry) and a tournament-rigged sport fisher (full
electronics, double spreader outriggers, electric teaser reels, bait well,
downriggers, tournament tackle from 2 lb. to 80 lb., fly tackle).
This boat is
operated by the owner, Capt. Jens Klaus, who has been fishing in Costa Rica for
16 years and world wide for over 30. Perfect
Hooker is also available for non-fishing charters
(cruises, sunset tours with or without dinner, parties, etc.)
Perfect Hooker
She’s
different, that’s for sure, and we, her crew, think its for the better. We
are dedicated to conservation, which means when fishing for billfish, we use
circle hooks for bait exclusively (unless we are specifically fishing for world
records). We never pull a fish aboard, and all billfish
are
tagged and released, unless they are potential world records. Many claim, you
can’t take a nice photo of a billfish, unless you pull it aboard. We have the
proof that this is nonsense.
Also, Perfect
Hooker does not participate in the “numbers game”. Other boats and charter
companies talk about how many fish they have caught, one company even went to
the extreme of publishing these numbers on a board every day.
What
they don’t talk about, is how many fish the client has hooked, fought and
brought to the boat. Usually its ZERO!
Some boats do not allow the client to touch the rod, till the fish is hooked. I
find it strange to have somebody pay $ 500 to $1.200 and tell them they can't
really fish. As it is
much more of an accomplishment for an angler if she or he hooks the fish, my
crew and me try to teach them whenever they are interested. It goes without
saying that we will hook our client’s fish whenever that is requested. We do
nevertheless not take the fun away from them. Everybody who was on the Perfect
Hooker that day last February and saw the smile on t he
face of a 72 year old lady, who hooked, fought and brought to the boat 2 nice
Sails, will understand, what I am talking about. Could she have “caught” more
fish with the mates hooking them? Who cares? She certainly didn’t, and
neither do I, as long as my clients leave the boat satisfied. I believe we
accomplish that most of the time.
So, whenever
somebody tells you that boat “xyz” caught so and so many fish, ask them, how
many the client hooked, fought and brought to the boat. If she or he did not do
all three, the client didn’t catch a single fish!
Also, all
tackle aboard the Perfect Hooker is rigged according to IGFA rules and all lines
are tournament grade. If a client gets lucky and hooks a world record size fish,
he or she got a real chance to end up in the record book.
Finally, we
usually fish 20 lb. line for Sailfish and 30 lb. for Marlin (tackle from 2 lb.
to 80 lb. is available), which gives the fish a chance to perform at it’s best.
